The One Year War

This is where the "Real Robot" genre began. Moving away from the "superheroes" of 70s mecha, Gundam presented a gritty, political war drama where the robots were just tools—mass-produced weapons of war.

The story follows Amuro Ray, a civilian teenager on the space colony Side 7. When the Principality of Zeon attacks, Amuro accidentally stumbles into the cockpit of the Earth Federation's secret weapon: the RX-78-2 Gundam.

Forced onto the battleship White Base, Amuro and a crew of untrained civilians must survive a desperate journey across space and Earth. Amuro grapples with the trauma of war, his awakening abilities as a "Newtype," and a legendary rivalry with Zeon's "Red Comet," Char Aznable.
