The Archetype of the Rival.
Char isn't just a villain; he is the lens through which we see the corruption of the Federation and the tragedy of the Zabi family. While Amuro fights to survive, Char fights for a grand design. His coolness under pressure, his distinct fashion sense (the mask, the sleeveless uniform), and his complex morality make him infinitely more interesting than the protagonist.
My favorite aspect of Char is his pragmatism. He will use anyone—Lalah, Garma, even his own sister—to achieve his vengeance against the Zabis. Yet, he carries the weight of those choices.
