Welcome, Soul Reaper!

Welcome to the BLEACH 25th Anniversary Shrine, the newest addition to the Sentinel Productions Retro Shrines. Tite Kubo's manga first ran in Weekly Shōnen Jump in August 2001, which makes 2026 its 25th birthday. It's also my 20th year as a fan, so I built this shrine the way we built them back in 2006: tables, blinkies, a marquee, a hit counter and way too much orange.

Some kid discovers BLEACH. Twenty years pass. (That kid is me.)

My 20 Years in Soul Society

2006 was the year BLEACH got its hooks into me: the year the English dub landed on Adult Swim and the first movie opened in Japan. Twenty years later the manga has finished its 74-volume run, the anime has finally reached the end of the Thousand-Year Blood War, and BLEACH itself has turned 25. Seemed like the right moment to build it a proper shrine.

The gist

Agent of the Shinigami

1–8

Ichigo Kurosaki can see ghosts. One bad night later he's carrying Rukia Kuchiki's Soul Reaper powers and moonlighting as a Hollow hunter. Lending those powers is a crime, and Rukia gets dragged home to face execution.

Soul Society

8–21

A rescue mission straight into the afterlife, through gate guards, lieutenants and captains of all thirteen divisions. Aizen faked his own death and was pulling every string the whole time.

Arrancar
incl. Hueco Mundo & Fake Karakura Town

21–48

Aizen's Espada, the Visored, Ichigo's inner Hollow, and the longest war of nerves in shōnen. Ichigo trades away all his powers to stop Aizen.

The Lost Agent

49–54

A powerless Ichigo meets the Fullbringers of Xcution, who offer him a way back. The Gotei 13 restore his powers with a blade carrying their own spiritual pressure.

Thousand-Year Blood War

55–74

The Quincy return under Yhwach and invade Soul Society. Everything ends here. Ichigo's mother was a Quincy, and Yamamoto is the first great loss.

* Approximate volume ranges; fans have argued about the exact borders since 2006.
