Macross Plus
The Premise: Thirty years after the war with the Zentraedi, humanity has spread to the stars. On the colony planet Eden, two test pilots—the hotheaded Isamu Dyson and the stoic Guld Goa Bowman—compete to determine the next generation of Variable Fighter.
However, their rivalry is complicated by their shared past with Myung Fang Lone, the producer of the galaxy's hottest AI idol, Sharon Apple. As the test flights escalate into deadly dogfights, the AI begins to develop a terrifying consciousness of its own.
The Animation: Macross Plus stands as the high-water mark of the 90s OVA era. Directed by Shinichiro Watanabe (of Cowboy Bebop fame) and Shoji Kawamori, it blends traditional cel animation with early CGI in a way that feels seamless and gritty. The "Itano Circus" missile swarms here are some of the best ever put to film.
The Music: This was Yoko Kanno's breakout role in anime. The soundtrack shifts effortlessly from techno-trance (Sharon Apple's concerts) to haunting orchestral pieces. "Voices" remains one of the most iconic songs in the franchise.
Final Thoughts: It sheds the "Space Opera" campiness of the original series for a mature, psychological drama. You don't need to see the original Macross to understand it, but it enriches the world building immensely. It is, simply put, a masterpiece.
